1979 Yamazaki Mizunara Cask
From Japan's pre-eminent distillery, a rare Yamazaki single cask distilled back in 1979. Historically significant, as Suntory only started bottling Yamazaki as a single malt from 1984 onwards.
Japanese oak, apart from being an expensive raw material, is difficult to work with as the casks are prone to leakage and higher rates of evaporation. Historically, they were used sparingly by the distillery even though they yield whisky of the utmost quality.
Very highly rated by the Malt Maniacs and awarded the elusive '5-stars' from Serge Valentin of whiskyfun.com, this is a true benchmark of Japanese whisky.
A limited edition of 294 bottles originally released around 2009.
